Acclaimed as one of the best movies of recent times-I don't know this is a word of mouth or a real hit with the critics- "Drishyam" but failed to impress me. Maybe because of the reason that I watched the movie with high expectation because of the reviews from my friends and family. There were two reasons why I didn't like the movie - 1. I think the talent of the brilliant actor-Padmasree Bharath Mohanlal- was wasted in the movie. As far as this film is concerned the script is the hero and anyone could have replaced him. It is a fact that the presence of the legendary actor have created a hype for this film. 2. As I said the plot is the hero of the film, but I hated it. Don't get me wrong, I loved the brilliance of the protagonist who covered the crime. But there lies the problem- "Covering up a crime"- Is that the right thing to do. Being a law abiding citizen I couldn't digest this part. I kept on expecting that the protagonist, at some point of time will accept his mistake surrender himself to the judiciary. But it never happened.
This point is later explained in the film, as he covered up everything to protect his family. Well justified, as the head of the family wanted to protect them. But isn't it giving a message that if you have the capability to cover up a crime, you can do anything.
But then I thought why people liked and accepted this movie so much. I could only come to the conclusion that, people today have lost their faith and confidence in the Law and Judiciary system in our country. In the story the hero says - IG of police who also happens to be the mother of the murdered boy would have saved his son in spite of his crime. So its obvious he has no faith in the system which protects or punishes an offender depending on his social status. If a culprit have someone influential to support, then the possibility of him/her being convicted is pretty less or nil sometimes. Its such a shame that in a democratic country like India such things happen. Rapists, murderers, blackmailers all walk our streets free. Its high time that our judicial system do something to win the confidence of the common man. Its high time the law and order in or country reassure the public that its there to help them, so that a father no longer need to hide a crime to protect his family.
Note: I loved the portrayal of IG by Asha Sharath. It will be a crime if I don't mention her.
